One of the most common questions when renting self storage is: “How many square metres do I need?”

The answer depends on more than the number of boxes. Furniture size, item type and how you plan to organise the unit all matter.

Start with an inventory

Separate your belongings into:

  • Boxes
  • Luggage
  • Furniture
  • Appliances
  • Sports equipment
  • Documents
  • Collections
  • Frequently accessed items

Then measure your largest items, such as beds, sofas, wardrobes, tables and appliances.

Square metres are not the whole story

Two units with the same floor area may hold different amounts depending on ceiling height, room shape, door size and layout.

Consider floor area, available volume and how efficiently you can arrange the space

A simple way to estimate

A few boxes and bags
Suitable for documents, personal belongings or seasonal items.

Many boxes plus smaller furniture
You need enough space to stack boxes while still being able to reach them.

Furniture from a condo
Focus on large items such as sofas, beds, wardrobes, tables and appliances.

Household contents or business inventory
Create an inventory and estimate based on the actual dimensions rather than guessing from the number of rooms.

Do not rent more space than you need

A unit that is too large means paying for unused space.

A unit that is too small can make belongings difficult to access and increase the risk of items being damaged from overpacking.

What if you are unsure?

Send the storage provider a list or photographs of your belongings and ask them to recommend an appropriate unit size. Also ask whether you can change unit sizes later if your requirements change.

In short: the right storage size is large enough to keep everything safely and accessibly organised without paying for unnecessary space.
