Storing furniture during a move or renovation can protect it from dust, paint, moisture and accidental damage. However, simply placing furniture into a storage unit without preparing it properly can create problems later.

1. Clean everything before storage
Remove dust, dirt and stains before storing furniture, especially fabric, leather and other materials that can retain moisture.
Everything should be completely dry before it goes into storage.
2. Disassemble what you can
If possible, remove table legs, shelves and other detachable parts.
Keep screws and small components in labelled bags so you know which furniture they belong to.
3. Use suitable protective materials
Use furniture covers and protective wrapping where appropriate, particularly around corners and fragile surfaces.
Avoid wrapping materials that can trap moisture for long periods without adequate ventilation.
4. Do not put heavy items on fragile furniture
Place larger, stronger items at the bottom and lighter items on top.
Avoid placing heavy boxes on sofas, mattresses or furniture that can become permanently compressed or distorted.
5. Leave space to access your belongings
Do not fill the storage unit so tightly that nothing can be reached.
If you expect to retrieve items during the renovation, keep frequently needed belongings near the front.
6. Choose storage suitable for your furniture
For wooden furniture, leather, documents or other items sensitive to heat and humidity, ask how the facility manages the storage environment.
In short: good furniture storage starts before the furniture enters the unit. Clean it, dry it, protect it properly and organise the unit so your belongings remain accessible.
